It’s a new year, which means new movies. And IMDB has released a list of the most anticipated films of 2025, according to user engagement on their site.

  3. The Fantastic Four: First Steps
  4. How To Train Your Dragon
  5. Thunderbolts*
  6. Captain America: Brave New World
  7. Snow White
  8. Jurassic World: Rebirth
  9. A Minecraft Movie
  10. Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning

It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that every single one of those is based on existing IP. Nine of the ten are a sequel, reboot, or remake. The only non-sequel, first-time film is A Minecraft Movie.

These franchises have all built up fan bases and followings. So of course they’re more anticipated than auteur-driven pictures like Mickey 17 (Bong-Joon-ho), Eddington (Ari Aster), and Bugonia (Yorgos Lanthimos).


What Were The Most Anticipated Movies Of 2024?

I thought it would be fun to look back one year prior to the most anticipated movies of 2024. Knowing what we know now, the list is kind of comical.

  2. Joker: Folie à Deux | 31%
  3. Argylle | 33%
  4. Beetlejuice 2 | 76%
  5. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga | 90%
  6. Deadpool 3 | 78%
  7. Madame Web | 11%
  8. Mean Girls | 69%
  9. Gladiator 2 | 71%
  10. Kraven the Hunter | 16%

Where to start? In terms of box office, three made the domestic top-10 for the year. Deadpool & Wolverine (2), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (6), and Dune: Part Two (7). In terms of critical response, six of the 10 were Fresh according to Rotten Tomatoes.


Predicting How The Most Anticipated Movies Of 2025 Will Perform

Honestly, I feel like the most anticipated of 2025 will blow the 2024 films out of the water.

  2. 28 Years Later | Fresh
  3. The Fantastic Four: First Steps | Fresh | Top 10
  4. How To Train Your Dragon | Fresh | Top 10
  5. Thunderbolts* | Fresh | Top 10
  6. Captain America: Brave New World | Fresh | Top 10
  7. Snow White | Fresh | Top 10
  8. Jurassic World: Rebirth | Rotten | Top 10
  9. A Minecraft Movie | Rotten
  10. Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning | Fresh

So I’m going with eight of these being fresh and seven ending up in the top 10. I just don’t see how you can doubt four Disney movies, a DC movie, and the first live-action adaptation from DreamWorks. And no Jurassic Park movie has ever landed outside the top 10. I doubt Rebirth will be the first.
