Undead are a common D&D foe at all levels, with the lowly skeletons and zombies at level 1, mighty mummies and wraiths in the mid-range, leading up to vampire lords and liches. The reason DMs love them is because there is little debate about dealing with them, as undead are almost universally evil.

A new video on the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel has revealed new information about the upgrades to the undead type in the 2025 Monster Manual, which is set to launch on February 18. These not only include expanding existing families of creatures, but strengthening creatures that already existed.
Undead Are Way Scarier In The 2025 Monster Manual
One creature that has received a significant buff is the ghost. The 2014 version of the monster was already a pain, due to its ability to become ethereal, but it now deals a ton of damage with its attacks that can potentially one-shot unprepared groups.
Another change is providing iterations of popular monsters for different level ranges, such as the Gravecaller for the lich, Haunting Revenant for revenants (which are possessed buildings), and the Death Knight Aspirant. This means weaker and stronger versions exist for DMs to use.
