I’ve always thought boss fights in stealth games have no place at all, but certain titles have shown me otherwise.
While I maintain it’s difficult to make an encounter of this style that properly fits the genre’s mechanics, there’s a distinguished selection of examples that show how to execute this brilliantly.
Whether by cleverly occupying the environment or turning the fight into an entire level, the ways to integrate these fights are complicated but very satisfying.
So, in the interest of giving credit to those experiences that fulfill such a complex responsibility, here are the 10 best boss fights in stealth games.
10 Jaron Namir
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
While Deus Ex: Human Revolution isn’t a pure stealth game, it’s an experience best enjoyed in the shadows. It has few boss fights, but they make up for that handsomely with the gameplay diversity.
However, my favorite will always be Jaron Namir’s, not only because of the build-up to his encounter but given how it reinforces the game’s mechanics.
From taking advantage of your augmentations to using your weapons and tools at the right moments, this labyrinthine mutual chase is reminiscent of the best of classics like Metal Gear Solid and Confidential Mission.
It can get frustrating given its difficulty, but it’s the point in the campaign where you realize how cleverly Deus Ex: Human Revolution is designed.
9 Primal Erin
Thief

Thief is a series characterized by its iconic stealth mechanics and terrifying atmosphere, and these elements come together in the fight with Primal Erin.
The boss fight that marks the latest installment’s end isn’t a gameplay challenge but a puzzle, where you must collect pieces of a magical stone throughout the room to defeat her.
The Primal Erin fight captures the constant feeling of tension that permeates the entire franchise, adding a mystical touch that suits it quite well.
If you know what to do, evading Erin’s clones to find the fragments is a simple task, but it’s still an interesting approach to a boss fight.
8 Tsubuyaku
Aragami 2

I think Aragami 2 is inferior to its predecessor, but the use of shadows and boss fights are some elements the sequel executes in a much more enjoyable way.
The best demonstration of this is Tsubuyaku, another stealth aragami that forces us to deal with hordes of enemies repeatedly until we can deliver the final blow after a platforming section.
It can be frustrating due to the large number of enemies to eliminate, but the challenge is satisfying because of how it pushes you to familiarize yourself with the environment and the guards’ patterns.
The fight with Tsubuyaku seeks to squeeze out several of the stealth genre’s most important mechanical premises and, while it doesn’t execute it perfectly, it’s a compelling concept.
7 Majid Sadiq
Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is one of the best video games regarding action sequences, as reflected in the pursuit of Majid Sadiq.

12 Hardest Final Bosses of All Time
Notoriously hellish and oh-so annoying.
The entire campaign takes us around the world, infiltrating a myriad of places to stop the terrorist group of Engineers, and counting on countless gadgets to do so.
However, this boss fight is a special encounter because Sam Fisher relies entirely on his skills to overcome it. Chasing Majid Sadiq is supposed to be risky, and the game knows perfectly well how to make you feel that.
The battle is tense, doesn’t allow mistakes, and requires you to have all your senses at their maximum to come out ahead, taking all the sensations the game generates to a new level.
6 David
The Last of Us
The Last of Us is a game that leans heavily on stealth due to its post-apocalyptic setting, but no instance feels as intense as the showdown with David.
As our beloved Ellie is separated from her iconic duo, and is also being pursued by a cannibal, silence and caution take on greater relevance in a hostile environment that achieves great immersion.
The execution is mechanically simple, but the rest of the elements elevate the experience. Between the story and sound, The Last of Us reminds us how sometimes less can be more.
Running into David is one of the campaign’s most memorable points, both narratively and gameplay-wise. The title is constantly trying to make you feel vulnerable, but that particular dispute is in another league.
5 Kelly
Mark of the Ninja

The stealth genre is overflowing with underrated games, though few quite match Mark of the Ninja.

10 Boss Fights You Literally Cannot Lose
Games like Hollow Knight and Earthworm Jim have boss encounters that you could only lose by turning the game off.
Despite its indie status, it’s excellent in every way, including memorable boss fights like Kelly‘s that really take advantage of its mechanical style’s qualities.
The first boss in the campaign lets you get to know the basics in the best way possible. Using the environment, camouflaging yourself in the shadows, taking out extra enemies first… It’s an outstanding encounter from beginning to end.
Mark of the Ninja is a title any stealth developer should check out to understand what makes a great encounter.
4 Solidus Snake
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is one of Hideo Kojima’s best games, with so many reasons to praise it that we’d never finish talking about it.
Among them, I will always applaud Solidus Snake‘s fight, especially for subverting every expectation one might have from a boss in an infiltration title.
Turning the final encounter into a fight of both swordsmen and ideals is one of the most wonderful decisions Kojima has made, and that’s saying something.
Having aged like the finest of wines, Solidus Snake is an iconic boss in all his glory, and this fight is the kind of instance that makes Metal Gear Solid 2 a unique game.
3 Delilah Copperspoon
Dishonored 2

Since its inception, the bosses in Dishonored have always been the levels, never the characters. Thus, the showdown with Delilah Copperspoon in Dishonored 2 is even more impressive.
This fight was teased since the first title’s expansion, and the outcome did not disappoint at all, neither in terms of plot nor gameplay.
The idea of immersing yourself in a painted world and dealing with the coup leader’s clones with magical abilities and surreal scenarios is fantastic beyond belief.
When you master the mechanics, it goes by like a breeze. When you don’t, it’s a fight full of tension, mysticism, and expectation that truly shows why Dishonored 2 is among the greatest of stealth.
2 Mr. Freeze
Batman Arkham City

Batman: Arkham City is one of the best superhero stealth video games of all time, with an unmatched balance between action and infiltration.
That equilibrium is best seen in the confrontation with Mr. Freeze, which brings out the game’s prominent qualities, including both the interactivity with the scenarios and the wide range of tools Batman has.
His ability to adapt to our strategies and change his behavior is excellent, making the fight feel natural and immersive. While in the genre it is normal for patterns to be the norm, Mr. Freeze forces you to adapt to the circumstances like no other boss.
From the verticality to the variety of playable options, it’s the fight that stands out the most in the game for its perfect design, making you feel truly in The Dark Knight’s skin.
1 The End
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

The Metal Gear Solid series is full of clever boss fights, but The End in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will never be topped.
The game exploits the setting to the max with an encounter that makes you one with nature, leading you to chase down trails while eluding the deadliest sniper in history.
Even without considering its wonderful easter eggs, The End offers unique combat that frankly has no equal, both in terms of execution and in sheer concept.
I’ve talked a lot about feelings like tension, anticipation, preparation, and adaptation, but none of these emotions are felt as vividly in other encounters as they are with The End, the best boss fight in a stealth game ever.
