Perhaps one of the most mysterious Nightfarers in Elden Ring Nightreign, the Guardian is certainly a powerful character in the right hands. Equipped with a wing-like shield and thrusting halberd, nothing is getting past this bird’s wicked defences.

But why can’t this avian avenger fly, bound to the earth like the rest of us mere mortals? And what happened to his previous flock? Well, to find out all that and more, you’ll have to progress through the Guardian’s Remembrance Quest.

This guide will cover all the steps needed to get through this quest, as well as how to obtain the memory fragments required to access it.

Memory Fragments

These fragments are rather important items, used for unlocking chapters of our Nightfarer’s memories. While you may not be able to physically see these fragments, there is an easy way to get hold of them.

The first 3 of the Guardian’s chapters can be obtained simply by playing the character and running expeditions solo or with a team. The further you get, the more likely you are to receive a fragment.

However, for their first official mission in Chapter 4, you’re going to need to beat a Nightlord using The Guardian. I would, of course, recommend Gladius as he’s the easiest.

In order to progress further, you’re going to need to complete another Nightlord with The Guardian to unlock chapter 6. Upon completing this next quest, Chapter 7 should unlock automatically, and you’ll need to make another trip out into Limveld.

In terms of the next and final Remembrance Chapter, this was unlocked for me as soon as I finished Chapter 7. However, it’s important to note that I completed that expedition, thus killing a Nightlord and auto-unlocking the next chapter.

What is crucial, however, is that before you go on the expedition for Chapter 7, make sure that you unlock the Revenant by purchasing the besmirched Frame and finding her ghost in the Journal Room.

Chapter 4 – The Stalwart Giant

To start the first remembrance quest, first, you must head over to the Journal room, due east of the main expedition hall. Flip through the Guardian’s chapters and select “Begin remembrance” in Chapter 4.

• In the room west of the main hall, you’ll see the Iron Menial. Speak with him and exhaust all of his dialogue. This will take a few moments. Eventually, he will task you with retrieving a Stone Stake from Limveld.
• Ready your relics and head out on an expedition. The boss selection doesn’t matter here.
• Head over to the Southwest of the map, preferably at the start of the second day, or on the first day with a competent team and look for the collapsed Golem.
• Target his legs and be careful of his large slamming attacks. This golem is more powerful than the ones you’d usually see in the churches or castles around Limveld.
• Complete the expedition, or simply let your team die, and return to the Iron Menial.
• He will give you the Second Volume, and the first remembrance quest will be complete.
• Head over to the spiral gateway and conclude the remembrance.

Upon completion, you will be rewarded with the Stone Stake that you obtained by killing the Golem. This is a Red Slot Relic, able to be equipped on the Relic Rite Altar. Its bonuses are as follows.

• Increased duration for Character Skill
• Character Skill Cooldown Reduction +3

While this is a pretty good relic if you’ve just started playing Guardian, you should find better ones later on as you keep completing expeditions. This skill buff on a stronger relic is great for grouping up a bunch of weaker enemies to kill in one charged R2 attack.

Chapter 6 – An Eerie Encounter

If you defeated the Nightlord while completing the Chapter 4 quest, then Chapter 6 should automatically unlock for you. If you fail the expedition, then you’re going to have to defeat another Nightlord to unlock this quest.

• First of all, head over to the dressing room, where you will find the costume mirror.
• Here you will find a ghostly merchant NPC. Exhaust his dialogue until you receive the Eerie Charm.
• (Optional) You can open his shop if you wish, to find a bunch of relics, all with a single bonus each. In my opinion, these are totally worthless and a waste of your Murk. Buying these does not progress the quest in any way, so ignore them.
• Upon reaching the main chamber, the Guardian will faint and subsequently wake up in the room south of the Journal.
• Speak with the Iron Menial and the Recluse, head back to the Merchant, and choose the option to eliminate him.
• Returning to the Iron Menial, you will be tasked with finding the Demon Merchant, to whom the final Volume has been sold.
• Once more, enter the spiral gateway to conclude this portion of the quest.

Here you will be given the Guardian’s Chalice, which has a new set of colours, should you wish to switch up your starting relic loadout for something more appropriate.

Chapter 7 – The Maniacal Merchant

At this point, for me, Chapter 7 automatically unlocked after completing Chapter 6, so begin this and get ready to head back out on another expedition.

• First off, go find the Iron Menial due south of the Journal. You will show him the Ledger of the merchant you just killed, and you will be tasked to find another merchant and purchase the final tome from him.
• Before you head off on another expedition, I would suggest not picking Libra. If you didn’t already know, Libra is the Demon Merchant, and thus selecting him may cause the merchant not to show up in the overworld.
• In any case, choose another boss, and look on your map to find the glowing red quest icon. This location is totally random and changes per player.
• Collect 10,000 runes and find him as soon as you can. Whatever you do, don’t attack, as this will cause him to fight back. And this isn’t a particularly easy fight if you choose to do so. Instead, select “I want the tome” and complete the expedition as normal.
• Return to the Iron Menial and show him the Third Volume.
• Exit via the spiral gateway to finish Chapter 7 of the quest.

Upon completion of this, you will receive the Third Volume, which, just like the Stone Stake, can also function as a relic. The Third Volume comes with the following attributes:

• Creates a whirlwind when charging halberd attacks
• HP Restoration upon Halberd Attacks

Again, similarly to the previous relic, this one is pretty strong, but can be outclassed since it only has 2 buffs. In addition, you can get this same buff on stronger relics. So, perhaps equip it for now, while you search for something with a bit more juice.

Chapter 9 – To Forgive And Forget

If you’ve already unlocked The Revenant, the next two chapters should unlock automatically after successfully completing the boss during the Chapter 7 expedition. If not, quickly go unlock her and complete another expedition.

This is the fourth and final part of the quest chain, and is very quick compared to the previous missions.

• Begin the remembrance chapter and read the note that has been left on the table by the Revenant.
• Head on over to the library, west of the expedition room, and look for the glowing light in the northwest corner of the room. Read the note and you’ll find out the truth about why your wings were so cruelly clipped.
• Open up your map and head over to the cliffs, northwest of the Roundtable Hold, where you will find the Recluse.
• Here you will be presented with a dialogue option. Select “Are you the maker of the curse?” and she will admit that she was the one who cursed you and your previous flock.
• At this point, you have a decision to make. You can either choose to forgive her or punish her for her actions. I chose to forgive her (I know, very kind), and thus I received the Witch’s Brooch item.
• However, don’t worry if you wish to choose the other option, it won’t remove her from the game or anything. Instead, you’ll receive the Cracked Witch’s Brooch, which is functionally identical to the normal one, but it just looks different.
• You can talk to the Recluse one final time and then head over to the spiral gateway to finish the Guardian’s quest once and for all.

For this, you will receive the Remembrance Skin of the Guardian, which features the helmet that was repaired by the Raider. It’s a pretty nice addition to his look, and certainly more interesting than the remembrance skin for the Wylder, for example.

On top of that, you will also receive either version of the Witch’s Brooch, which, of course, can function as a relic with the following properties.

• Slowly restores nearby allies’ HP while Art is active
• Reflects a portion of the damage received when the ability is activated
• Vigor +3

This relic, plus the other two you have received, buffs the Guardian by a good amount. However, if you really want to become a proper tank and assist your teammates properly, try and find a relic that attracts foes to you when guarding.

You can buy one of those from the Small Jar Merchant in the Roundtable Hold. Learning how to utilise your passive, with a relic like this, will truly up your game.
