The Wild Robot makes its streaming debut on January 24th, on Peacock. And you shouldn’t miss it, because Robot, out of nowhere, became one of the most successful films of 2024.


Its domestic box office of $143M landed as the 16th highest of the year. The Rotten Tomato score was a whopping 97% from critics and 98% from audiences.


What Is The Wild Robot About, And Why Should You Watch It?

The story follows a robot, Rozzum Unit 7134, that falls off a cargo ship and washes up on a humanless island. But there’s a thriving animal community that Roz becomes part of. I’ll spare you the highs and lows that follow, but know you’ll laugh and cry and have a great time.

While DreamWorks doesn’t enjoy the same prestige as Disney or Pixar, they have been quite the powerhouse in animation since their debut in 1998 (with Antz and The Prince of Egypt).

Can We Expect More Wild Robot Movies?

The Wild Robot was originally a novel written by Peter Brown and released in 2016. Brown followed with two sequels: The Wild Robot Escapes (2018) and The Wild Robot Protects (2023).

In October 2024, the film’s director, Chris Sanders, confirmed to Deadline that a sequel was in the works.

100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one.

Before The Wild Robot, Sanders had directed How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. He also helped develop the stories for Disney’s original animated versions of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. In the world of animation, Sanders is pretty much a legend.

It’s a good sign for the quality of the sequel that someone with Sanders’s filmography is staying on to direct. As of right now, there is no release date.
