Sea of Stars is a game that borrows a lot of features and aspects from the golden era JRPG, Chrono Trigger. It shouldn’t be too surprising, as it’s a wonderful game on which to base your modern JPRG. After all, it’s not the only indie JRPG that used the best JRPG on the SNES as inspiration for its designs.

One of these inspirations is reflected in the battle system, where party members can combine their skills to perform duo or trio combos, clearly nodding to the Double and Triple Techs from Chrono Trigger.

Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker Review

It’s a free DLC, but is it worth your time?

Since Throes of the Watchmaker changed our protagonists’ classes and introduced a new party member, all our previous combo knowledge was thrown in the gutter. Now, we need to learn everything all over again.

Some combos are learned naturally as we level up, while others require finding a combo scroll. In this guide, I’ll show you where to find all combos in Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker to effortlessly defeat the evil twins of the Solstice Warriors.

Sea of Stars Throes of the Watchmaker All Combo Locations (9)

Altogether, our party members have seven combos. Five for each character, two as trios, and the rest are spread between two specific party members.

Four of these are learned naturally by leveling up, a feature called Renown in Throes of the Watchmaker. The other three combos, including one of the best among them, are learned after finding a Combo Scroll in certain maps.

Here’s a table with the combo scrolls that can be found and the effect of each skill:

Combo

Party Members

Effect

Heap Frog

Valere + Arty

Leap off of targets, dealing Laser and Magic damage with each bounce.

Jugglecore

Zale + Valere

Multi-hit moderate Bonk, Fire, and Magic damage on a single target.

Galette des Rois

Zale + Arty

Mystery boxes fall from the sky, some healing allies, others dealing Bonk damage to enemies.

10 Best JRPGs For Non-JRPG Fans

JRPGs are an acquired taste for some, but these games are tasty no matter what.

Heap Frog

Rail Forest

Rail Forest is the dungeon right after our official visit to Horloge Town, where we go to retrieve Fardush’s train. Once you reach the forest, keep going until you get to a place where you need to activate some kind of plug on the ground to manipulate bridges.

Before solving the puzzles, walk a bit south to find a combo scroll in a small alcove. Climb down the ledges, and that’s it, you get Heap Frog. Truthfully, you’d only miss this combo scroll if you were playing blindfolded.

Jugglecore

Ivory Towers

In Ivory Towers you’ll obtain the Mule Drone, a new gadget that will help you with a new type of puzzle gimmick in Throes of the Watchmaker. Right after that, you’ll reach a puzzle where you need to assemble a giant portrait of the Narcis King.

As soon as you finish this puzzle, climb two sets of stairs and reach an area where you’ll need to collect platform blocks with the Mule Drone to secure passage and move forward in the dungeon.

If you pay attention, there is a combo scroll to the northeast of this room. What you need to do is remove the block closest to the entrance door with the Mule Drone. This will remove the floor and reveal some vines.

Climb down the vines and move around to reach the platform next to the combo scroll. Go up and grab Jugglecore, which, in my opinion, is one of the most underwhelming combos but great for breaking locks.

Galette des Rois

Wolf Rock

I almost feel stupid giving directions to grab this one because the combo scroll is practically unmissable as you progress through Wolf Rock. But just in case, for some reason, you missed it and can’t unlock the trophy or achievement.

At some point in Wolf Rock, you’ll need to solve a puzzle where you must untie a rocky platform to open up an underwater path. Keep going, swimming, until you reach the other underwater sections.

Eventually, you’ll reach a current and fall down a waterfall. Let the waters carry you until you need to climb several rocky ledges. At the top, there will be another underwater access and the combo scroll for Galette des Rois, the best duo combo in Throes of the Watchmaker.
