Summary

  • A new Street Fighter live-action movie in the works with a peculiar cast including 50 Cent and WWE star Roman Reigns.
  • Movie features established actors like Jason Momoa, Noah Centineo, and Callina Liang taking on classic roles.
  • Legendary producing the film that will feature a combination of action and familiar storyline, directed by Kitao Sakurai.

In case you didn’t know, Capcom is taking another run at a Street Fighter live-action movie that’s targeting a release next year. While we haven’t gotten a trailer yet, the cast has been announced, and it’s hard to believe some of them are real.

We’re not saying the casting choices are bad, but rather, just a bit odd given some big names are attached and some are people I would never dream would be associated with a movie based on a video game.

50 Cent And WWE Star Join Street Fighter Live-Action Movie

Bison and Vega from Street Fighter II- The Animated Movie

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Curtis Jackson, most popularly known as rapper 50 Cent, has been cast to play the role of Balrog in the Street Fighter live-action movie.

50 Cent isn’t the only surprising casting announcement. WWE star Roman Reigns (real name Joe Anoa’i) has also been cast as Akuma! Yes, this is not an April Fool’s prank or anything.

The two casting choices shore up the cast which includes A-lister Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones) as Blanka, Noah Centineo (The Recruit) as Ken, Callina Liang (Presence) will play Chun-LI, and gay country singer Orville Peck has been cast to play Vega.

The movie’s main protagonist role has been given to martial artist-turned-actor Andrew Koji (Warrior) who will play Ryu.

For those unaware, the character names for some characters were shuffled around from the original Japanese version to the US. Burly boxer Balrog was named as M. Bison (M. Tyson, get it?) in Japan before Capcom changed it for legal reasons in the game’s release in the West. The series’ main baddie had the name Vega before it was changed to M. Bison when the game was released in the US. The Vega we all know now originally had the name Balrog.

Christophe Gans’ sequel is out in early 2026.

So far, the other main characters we expect to be part of the film that hasn’t been cast yet include Guile, E. Honda, Dhalsim,

The Street Fighter movie is being produced by Legendary Pictures, with Kitao Sakurai (The Eric Andre Show) directing the film when it kicks off production this August in Australia.

The plot itself is kept under wraps, but given it’s Street Fighter, expect lots of action where people beat each other up silly. Unless something very, very drastic happens, chances are, M. Bison will once again be the main villain, which Ryu and the rest will try and stop.

This is the second live-action Street Fighter movie being produced in Hollywood, with the first foray of the franchise ending in a disaster with the 1994 Street Fighter movie headlined by Jean-Claude Van Damme. That film, which loosely followed the game, was so bad that it managed to be a cult classic among video game fans given how campy it was.

Sony Pictures will release the live-action Street Fighter movie, which currently has no release date.

In other video game film news, the Elden Ring movie director isn’t just a film maker but is also a fan of the franchise, as he reveals the game that gave him the most trouble. Prepare for an onslaught of movies based on games to be hitting theaters soon, as The Legend of Zelda movie already has a release date, and even Hideo Kojima is getting in on the act with a movie based on Death Stranding.
